The Shela Hat Contest was held at legendary Peponi beach in the picturesque fishermen’s village of Shela, Lamu Island, Kenya. The contest was limited to workers of Shela construction sites and they were supposed to design hats from used materials as paper from cement bags, pipes, bones, shells, palmleaves, plastic, fabrics, coral. The result demonstrates the creativity and talents of East African people. On Saturday, 20th of March 2010 about 70 workers met at the beach in front of Peponi Hotel to compete with their creations. The winners were rated by a jury. Many thanks to Salim Mirza, Shuruti, Sidiki, Watermelon, Daniela, Hwarda, Omar Mafreeza and the people of Shela. Concept and photos by Roland Klemp. |
